Watch Out, Your Personality Is Being Monitored

quantified selfBy Gaby Lorenzo

I’m sure many of us have heard the phrase “quantified self.” If you haven’t, quantified self refers to tracking and monitoring who we are: extracting personal data to create personal meaning. As individuals, we love to measure and track everything in our lives — from what we are eating, to how many points we score in Angry Birds, to check-ins on Foursquare.  Let’s face it: we are a culture that is obsessed with having personal data for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. We have Klout, which measures a person’s influence on the social web. We have tennis rackets that capture data to analyze a player’s stroke power, ball spin or impact location. Why not measure your personality next? Continue reading

Duh-zine? Dusine? DESIGN.

Design imageBy Gaby Lorenzo

A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity to attend a presentation on the importance of design with Yves Behar, founder of Fuseproject and CCO of Jawbone, as well as Tim Brown, CEO and president of IDEO. I know that many people’s thoughts on the idea of design translate to an IKEA catalog or working on a PowerPoint presentation, but I’ve learned that it’s imperative that we dive further into the idea of design as individuals.

Here are some thoughts and questions that stuck me when listening to their discussion: Continue reading

A Thought On News And Reporting In The Digital Age

ipad appBy Gaby Lorenzo

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a discussion featuring Jill Abramson, the executive editor of the New York Times. Many people refer to the Times as “ The Old Grey Lady,” however, she corrected our common assumption with, “ ‘No, it’s just the Grey Lady.’ ”  Jill took us through some pretty monumental parts of her career, including covering the War on Iraq in 2003, how reporting was handled, and what could have been done differently, (seriously, she’s an inspiring lady).

Hungry for new social media? Try Pheed.

By Gaby Lorenzo

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, Foursquare, Instagram— the list of social media outlets continues to grow through a variety of new channels. Recently, I’ve  been hearing from friends and family that there is not enough quality content on social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Remarks such as “There are too many people posting about things that shouldn’t belong on social media” or “ There is a lot of misuse on social media sites.”  You can’t argue that social networking sites are on information overload, and there is a lot of conversation occurring online. So where do you jump into the right conversation?

Has the Digital Age Changed Our Music Tastes?

By Gaby Lorenzo

What is a compact disc? I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes a common question for Generation Z.  The digital era is quickly rising and steadily making CDs extinct. With the increase of new media outlets and sources for music in the last few years, we have developed new revenue streams and business models to track consumer preferences and sales. Ah, the endless opportunities. Continue reading

Great Ways to Keep in Touch, Globally

By Gaby Lorenzo

Do you have a cousin in Turkey who you miss talking on the phone with? What about your old roommate who is studying in Brazil? This year I discovered new ways to talk to my friends and family all over the world using  my smartphone. In case you didn’t know, there are a ton of great apps you can use to text and call friends in any country on a variety of mobile platforms. With these apps, I can send pictures of where I am to old friends. I can call my best friends during my morning commute while everyone in my time zone is asleep. I can group chat with family members about when I’m coming to visit. These app developers have made keeping in touch a breeze.

While there are a few types of messenger apps out there, WhatsApp and Viber are the two apps I recommend.

Voting via Mobile: The Future of Political Elections?

By Gaby Lorenzo

With elections approaching, many Californians will storm the polling booths and mail in their ballots. While many Americans believe it is their civic duty to vote, there are still a significant amount of individuals who don’t participate in the electoral process. How can we make this better? Mobile apps and mobile booths have been a hot topic of conversation to change voting patterns.
