You Are What You ‘Like?’

click personality.By Carolyn Linck

According to a recent study by the University of Cambridge, researchers are able to glean a lot of personal information simply by analyzing the people, places, photos, statuses and pages you’ve “liked” on Facebook over the years. Potentially leading to a treasure trove of information for marketers and privacy concerns for the average user, the study used a dataset of more than 58,000 American Facebook users from 2007 to 2012. Traits such as race, age, IQ, sexuality, personality, substance use and political orientation were accurately predicted by researchers the majority of the time. Here are some of the interesting results of the study: Continue reading

How Much Do You Know About Someone Based on Their Facebook – Apparently a Lot

By Carolyn Linck

I joined Facebook in July 2007 before starting my freshman year of college. I don’t even want to think about how much time I’ve spent on the website in the past five plus years. Whether procrastinating during finals or catching up on what my best friend from the sixth grade has been doing for the past decade, it’s safe to say that Facebook has eaten up a sizable amount of my time since 2007. I’ve often thought about how interesting it is to look back at old posts and pictures and reflect on how different I looked, acted and wrote when I was 18 compared to today. Continue reading

Trick-or-Tech: Halloween in the 21st Century

By Carolyn Linck

ImageHalloween was one of my favorite holidays growing up. Schools in Las Vegas, my hometown, were closed on Oct. 31 when I was a kid for Nevada Day to allegedly celebrate the day Nevada entered the Union in 1864. But we all knew it was really so we could get a head start on the Halloween fun. Every year I agonized over what to dress up as – should I be an Olympic gymnast? A ghost? No matter how anxious I was to get to the next house, or how slow they were walking, I was never to run ahead or leave their side.

Is Facebook Trying to Make Me Look Like A Dork?

By Andrea MacLean

First of all, when I heard about the new changes to Facebook my immediate reaction was, “Yikes. I better post some more interesting pictures and content fast!”  For those of you who are likely way cooler than me, however, you probably don’t need to worry about that so much. Continue reading

Facebook Updates and Expectations

By Jenna Starkey

According to today’s article in Mashable, Facebook has rolled out a “Big” privacy upgrade to iPhone. Of course my first reaction is it’s about time, and thank you. As the main program in my app arsenal, I depend on mobile Facebook to work just as seamlessly and effectively as the desktop version.  All the minute Facebook changes usually just annoy rather than excite me, but I’ll take what I can get.
