Going Viral – Why Things ‘Catch On’

viralBy Carolyn Linck

We’ve all seen it happen – from cat memes to products that instantly become “must-haves” to diets and dance crazes to YouTube video sensations – some things in today’s culture seem to “catch on” and spread like gossip after a high school dance until they’ve been shared across social media platforms, featured on television talk shows and casually discussed about among friends and they become a part of our social fabric. But what makes these things “go viral” and earn a place, even if only temporarily, in pop culture while others are never embraced and shared? Continue reading

You Are What You ‘Like?’

According to a recent study by the University of Cambridge, researchers are able to glean a lot of personal information simply by analyzing the people, places, photos, statuses and pages you’ve “liked” on Facebook over the years. Potentially leading to a treasure trove of information for marketers and privacy concerns for the average user, the study used a dataset of more than 58,000 American Facebook users from 2007 to 2012. Traits such as race, age, IQ, sexuality, personality, substance use and political orientation were accurately predicted by researchers the majority of the time. Here are some of the interesting results of the study: Continue reading

The Oreo Effect? Real-Time Marketing on Social Media

StarbucksBy Carolyn Linck

Only a few events capture the nation’s (and much of the world’s) attention — royal weddings, inaugurations, major sporting events and entertainment awards. By their nature, they attract large audiences and an abundance of media attention. In February we experienced two blockbusters: Super Bowl XLVII, with the San Francisco 49ers falling to the Baltimore Ravens, and the Academy Awards, with its impressive lineup of 2013 Oscar winners. With the explosion of social media use in recent years and the nearly 150 million people combined tuning into these events on television while participating in conversations about them online, marketers are taking notice in a new way – real time marketing.

Looking through the report, it struck me how Twitter has evolved over time into my primary news source. Whether on my smartphone or laptop, Twitter is always only a few clicks away and bam – aside from seeing where my friends have “checked in” or pictures of someone’s dog, I also have access to the latest developments on the world’s top news stories. How Much Do You Know About Someone Based on Their Facebook – Apparently a Lot

By Carolyn Linck

I joined Facebook in July 2007 before starting my freshman year of college. I don’t even want to think about how much time I’ve spent on the website in the past five plus years. Whether procrastinating during finals or catching up on what my best friend from the sixth grade has been doing for the past decade, it’s safe to say that Facebook has eaten up a sizable amount of my time since 2007. I’ve often thought about how interesting it is to look back at old posts and pictures and reflect on how different I looked, acted and wrote when I was 18 compared to today. Continue reading

By Carolyn Linck

While many people may think of video and computer games as traditionally male-dominated activities, that is changing dramatically with the advent of mobile games. Thanks to games designed specifically for smartphones and tablets, the term “gamer” no longer signifies teenage boys tied to their game consoles.

Navigating Outside Lands 2012

By Carolyn Linck

Up until last weekend I had never attended a music festival.  Heading into Outside Lands 2012 I was a bit intimidated – with multiple stages and artists performing simultaneously, dozens of food and drink vendors and thousands of people spread throughout Golden Gate Park, I was definitely a bit overwhelmed.  Thankfully, my friends and I had the Outside Lands 2012 Mobile App to help us navigate the three-day festival.
