Mobile Usage – An Astonishing Growth

Tons of phonesBy Alex Lattin

Late last week, Cisco released its Visual Networking Index Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update. According to the release, the company expects consumers’ usage of mobile will continue to grow and grow. Some astounding findings include:

  • Mobile traffic grew 70 percent in 2012
  • Mobile network connection speeds are forecasting to increase 7-fold by 2017
  • In 2017, there is expected to be more than 10 billion mobile-connected devices, outnumbering humans
  • Global mobile traffic in 2012 was 12 times the size of the entire global internet in 2000

So what does this mean to the average consumer? Sure, the facts are interesting, but how does this affect you?

Don’t be worried, the future effects from mobile on the consumers are positive. First is simple, your phone will be exponentially faster! From the development of advanced chip technology, smartphone processing power is growing, and with faster network connection speeds, your phone will become the ultimate quick and productive tool – for both person and work.

Additionally, with more mobile-connected devices than people on the planet, goods and services will also grow at alarming rate. With such a larger mobile market to tap into, business and entrepreneurs will continue to capitalize on that market. Even though it already is key to getting many things done, your phone will become even more of the ultimate personal and business tool.

A few decades ago, mobile phones would have been almost alien technology. But now we live in an age when you can check your email, access documents, surf the Web, Skype your friends, etc. from your bed, a train, at work, a restaurant or almost anywhere – all on your mobile device. Imagine what we will be able to do in a few more decades!

Alex LattinA little bit about me: I love the widespread adoption of mobile. From business to personal matters, everything is now on-the-go. Our society is running at an even faster pace, and it seems new advances in mobile technology are intelligent ways to keep up (whether you’re an average user or a business!). In my free time, if you don’t find me snowboarding or at the gym, then you will probably find me toying with my phone.

Banking technology has progressed rapidly over the years, more specifically, consumer banking technology. At first, all transactions, deposits, etc. had to be done physically at the bank. Then came the automated teller machine (or ATM), which allowed bank customers to make deposits, withdrawals and other transactions at any location that had their bank’s ATM. Now, there is mobile banking. Continue reading
